Feeding the ole dogs on the road

Feeding the ole dogs on the road

This seems like a simple topic…  dog bowl, dog food viola.

For me it isn’t so simple.  I have two dogs, both great at car traveling.  The problem is, they are both grazers and don’t gobble up what I dump in their bowls right away.  When they travel, the road seems to make them a little more high strung and anxious.  I don’t just leave bowls of food in my car, they always get knocked around and make the hugest mess.  Since I normally feed them dry kibble (natural choice lamb and rice) the solution is easy.  Give them some of that irresistible wet stuff.

My favorite brand of wet dog food is the 22oz cans of Trader Joe’s Chopped Lamb and Rice with Veggies.  What I do is basically feed them twice a day, morning and evening respectively.  I split one can between the two and mix in a cup of dry kibble.  They eat it up quick!  This not only assures they are both fed and keeping their energy up…  but also puts them on a reliable sh*t schedule.  I can pretty much count on it…  about 1 hour after they eat they are ready to dispatch some funk.    This is good information if you are looking at a long ride.

The cans are neat for packing, no mess no fuss.  The kibble on the other hand, can get real messy if you don’t keep things organized.  I recommend buying a small lockable tote from target or Walmart.  It is a great way to keep things clean.  I also pack a can opener, a coffee mug for measuring, a spoon for scooping and a freezer bag of Milk Bones in there as well.  Everything in one place, no fumbling around to dish out the goods.

Always have a Gallon of fresh water for the dogs.  Give them a drink every time you walk them on your trip.  They are always panting during travel and get dehydrated very quick.  If they stand up alot they are burning massive amounts of energy try to keep themselves stable.  A dog treat on the break is always a good idea as well.

Hope this helps any of you road warriors out there.  I have this sh*t down to a science!
